ECN’s Operational Protection Systems unit (SPF, as per its acronym in Spanish) employs the best practices for implementing projects with the Project Management Office (PMO), based on the national and international safety standards, such as NOM, NFPA and TUV.

INSTRUMENTED SAFETY

The industrial processes represent distinct hazard levels during operation, either for infrastructure, environment, damage to people and continuous operation. When these hazards increase due to the nature of their operation, it is necessary to reduce the possibility of failure in demand (PFD) for the control systems and elements that comprise it.

Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) are used for risk reduction where other systems are insufficient to mitigate them at a tolerable level. These systems are made up of one or several safety instrumented functions (SIF).

ECN designs SIS solutions up to SIL 2 for the operation of industrial plants, such as emergency shutdowns, control and monitoring systems, and gas and fire systems.

EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN SYSTEM

An emergency shutdown system (ESD) is a method for quickly stopping operation of the process and isolating it from input and output connections or flows to diminish the likelihood of an unwanted event from occurring, continuing or becoming aggravated. The purpose of an ESD system is to protect personnel, provide protection for the facility, and prevent a process event from causing considerable environmental impact.

The ESD system stands out from other safety systems in facilities because it responds to a hazardous situation which may affect the general safety of the entire facility. Therefore, it is considered to be one of the main safety systems to be present in any facility. Without and ESD system, an incident in a hydrocarbon facility may originate with “unlimited” fuel supplies that may destroy the entire network. Such situations have been widely proven by the bursts of wellheads which may be feed from underground deposits, and the destruction of the piping connections in offshore facilities affecting the availability of other means of isolation, as it happened with Piper Alpha.
